Am I a Candidate?

Your BMI is the initial factor that determines whether you'll qualify for weight loss surgery.  The goal of obesity management is to improve your health with reliable and durable weight loss. For those who suffer from morbid obesity, surgery may be most effective because it offers more permanent and reliable weight loss. To find out what your body mass index (BMI) is, use our BMI calculator tool.

To be eligible for weight loss surgery, we follow national standards that are based on several factors. These factors include that patients:

  • Are generally between the ages of 18 to 65 years old
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 35 and suffer from at least one chronic medical condition, such as type II diabetes or chronic high blood pressure
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater

If you're at least 90 pounds over your ideal body weight, you're typically eligible. We always want to ensure that patients are healthy enough to undergo a surgical procedure, so we do an extensive preoperative program that includes visits with our dietitians, psychologists, exercise specialists, and surgeons.
