If you’re considering weight loss surgery, Coordinated Health is here for you. We know making the decision to have a life-changing surgery can be scary, which is why we designed a patient-focused program to help you feel comfortable and confident at every step of the way.
Our surgical weight loss program is also designed to be the most comprehensive in the Lehigh Valley. “Obesity cannot be eliminated with one approach,” explains bariatric surgeon Dr. Venkat K. “Surgery is only one component of the process. That is why we take a multidisciplinary approach to give our patients the best possible outcome.”
Here’s a look at the care and services you can expect when you come to Coordinated Health’s Bariatric Surgery and Weight Loss Center.
You’ll be feeling the benefits of weight loss even before you have surgery. During the three to six months of nutrition and fitness coaching that every patient receives, you can expect to see improvements in your energy levels, sleep quality, and mental clarity.
The Bariatric Surgery and Weight Loss Center at Coordinated Health is the only bariatric surgery program in the area that requires patients to go through a pre-surgical fitness program. We believe establishing a fitness routine leads to better surgical outcomes and helps patients develop a positive relationship with routine exercise.
Nutrition counseling is also a key part of the pre-surgery process. Mallory Knoll, a registered dietician, will help you develop a healthy eating plan and provide you with the tools you need to actually stick to it.
We understand that juggling multiple healthcare appointments along with your daily responsibilities is stressful, especially in the weeks leading up to surgery.
You’ll be assigned a patient navigator who will personally guide you through every step of the pre- and post-op process. Our patient navigators are experienced medical assistants who will schedule all of your appointments for doctor visits, imaging, blood tests, nutrition counseling, and fitness coaching. In many cases we can offer multiple appointments at the same location on the same day. Your navigator will also walk you through a checklist of everything you need to do leading up to surgery so that you know exactly what to expect.
You’ll be in the very best of hands with our bariatric surgeons, Dr. John Dockins and Dr. Venkat. Our surgeons meet with each patient several times leading up to surgery, which allows them to provide you with individualized care.
Patient Scott Peters says his quality of life improved significantly after getting bariatric surgery. He highly recommends Dr. Dockins:
Patients will receive extensive monitoring post-surgery to make sure obesity-related health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnea, and heart disease are resolved. Nutritional counseling also continues after surgery.
You can expect follow-up appointments with your bariatric surgeon every three months for the first year after surgery. You’ll have follow-ups every six months for the second year and then once a year for life.
Connecting with others who know what you’re going through is one of the best ways to stay motivated and positive about weight loss. That’s why we offer monthly post-operative support groups for all of our patients. Led by our registered dietician Mallory Knoll, each meeting has a focused discussion topic—themes range from vitamins to exercise to plastic surgery.
